Most people love DIY projects because they’re exciting and rewarding. Learning how to fix leaks or replace pipes can also be interesting. Although you can do a few plumbing repairs on your own, some require experienced professionals – visit website to know more.

Making a slight mistake when fixing plumbing issues can lead to big problems. These may not come instantly but may build up over time. A poorly fixed pipe may make your bathroom, bedroom, and living room to be filled with water. Fortunately, you can avoid these disasters by knowing what to do and what not to do.

Here are some do’s and don’ts that can help you avoid plumbing disasters:

  1. Know The Location Of The Shut-Offs

Before beginning any plumbing project, locate every shut-off valve and determine what they control. If a professional plumber did your house’s plumbing, it could be easy to locate the shut-offs.

Most valves are located in the basement, though you may find some behind access panels. If you don’t understand what they control, use a trial and error method. Close the valves on and off as you flush the toilets and turn on the faucets.

You also need to know where the main shut-off is. Most of these shut-offs are installed where the water line enters the house. Have a clear picture of wear that shut-off because it’ll prevent you from confusion if you make a mistake.

Before beginning the plumbing repairs, shut off the main valve. That’ll enable you to prevent water from flooding the room whose pipe you’re fixing.

  1. Buy The Right Tools

Before beginning the project, take note of the tools you have in your toolbox and ensure you have the necessary equipment needed for the plumbing job. There’s nothing more frustrating than taking a day off, changing into your work clothes, and shutting the main water supply valve, only to realize you don’t have some tools. Doing some homework can help you identify the tools you lack but need.

Some plumbing tools you need for most DIY repairs include paper towels, pliers, Teflon tape, buckets, drain snake, rags, and plunger. Having these tools before starting the job will also prevent you from getting stuck in the middle of the job.

When replacing fixtures, ensure you buy spares with the same model as the one you’re fixing. A cut garden hose may not be the best replacement for piping. Using a pipe with a different diameter and material may not be the best idea because it may change water pressure and cause leakage or bursting.

  1. Avoid Chemicals

Most homeowners like to use chemicals to clear plumbing clogs. However, these chemicals may pollute the environment, harm your health, and interfere with the plumbing system. It would be best if you used greener alternatives instead of the chemicals.

Some safe mixtures that you can use to drain clogs include:

  • Cider vinegar and baking soda
  • Salt and baking soda
  • Boiling water
  • Drain snake
  • Lemon juice and baking soda

Conclusion

DIY plumbing can be a great way to save money. However, it’s essential to have some skills in plumbing to prevent more damage. These tips can equip you with some necessary knowledge that you need to start plumbing.
