The daunting task of moving is done. You have cleaned everything, packed everything, organized and moved all your belongings. Whether it is across town or across country, there are still some final steps that you need to take in order to feel at home. If this isn’t your first move, some of these may sound like common sense. However, if this is the first time leaving the nest, or you haven’t done it in a while, take heed to this essential advice!

Update Contact Information

Unless you are looking to remain incognito and escape from anyone contacting you again, you may want to update all your contact information. Just like when you lose your wallet, you never realize how many places you must update your new address and telephone number. The first place to update your contact information is the Palo Alto USPS. This way, all your normal mail will be forwarded to your new address right away. If possible, try not to move on a Friday. This was you can get all your contact information updated at the post office, DMV and by calling representatives for any other accounts that you may have.

Update Insurance Policies

If you have homeowner’s insurance, renter’s insurance, auto insurance, or health insurance, you will want to make sure that you update all your current policies. Moving locations can sometimes affect your rates and types of coverage that you need. It is your responsibility to update all these contacts, so make sure when you move, that you have your paperwork information handy. Have all necessary information on hand about your new house and ask questions about different types of insurance that need to be included in your premium in order to accommodate your needs for the new location. The Palo Alto USPS may not deliver sensitive mail via forwarding, so it is best to contact each entity separately.

Focus on the House

Surely, you probably had a lot to do in your last house before you moved. Now that you have officially made this your new residence, there are a few things that you should take care of in your new place right off the jump. First, you want to make sure that all your appliances are inspected and maintained. This is for safety and proper functioning to avoid any inconveniences. Have your utilities turned on ahead of time, and try to set up trash removal before you move in. There is always more that you want to get rid of when you move in, because your items don’t have the same “home” as they did before.

Getting to Know Your Surroundings

One thing about moving into a new location, is that you are now a part of a different community or neighborhood. Take time to get to know your surroundings. Once you meet your neighbors, contact your local Chamber of Commerce and City Hall to see what is available in your area for events, resources, and emergency needs. If you have children, find out what kid-friendly locations are near your home. Knowing your community and how to participate in it will help you make friends faster and make you feel at home more quickly.

The task list is almost never ending. Between putting your items away and rearranging things just right, there are several things that you must continue to do until your house feels like your home. Most people don’t start feeling at home for at least a year. However, the information above are part of your must-dos when you first move in.
