Common Furnace Problems No Homeowner Should Ignore

Knowing the common problems that can happen with a furnace ensures that homeowners can better prepare to get fixes taken care of. A little information on common issues and their symptoms will allow homeowners to better diagnose a problem and know when to get help from a heating repair services professional.

Wear and Tear Issues

When the weather is cold, your furnace is constantly running and this can result in wear and tear. This is normal, but it can get worse if small issues are allowed to continue without being fixed. When wear and tear is a factor, this can result in heat control-related problems, airflow issues and even the system overheating. If you think that your system might be experiencing this, it is time to consider heating repair services. A professional can come out and inspect your system. Any problems can be promptly addressed to prevent further issues.

Frequent Cycling

This is often an issue that you will notice because your system will appear to turn on and off far more frequently than you are used to. When this happens, a number of issues could be present, such as improper airflow, a clogged filter or a bad thermostat setting. You can check the filter on your own. If after you change it the problem persists, it is time to talk to a professional.

Change Your Furnace Filters

This is easy and usually something you can do on your own. Your filters pick up debris and other impurities so that they are not able to get into your system and cause issues. This means that they do become clogged with time. When your filters are especially dirty or dusty, this can result in a restriction in airflow. Your home will not get as warm as you are used to. More serious problems are also possible, such as your system shutting off too quickly or the exchanger overheating.

You should look at your filters about once a month and change them. Check the owner’s manual or your current filter to ensure that you get the right size for your system.

Malfunctioning Thermostat

Modern furnaces have a thermostat, which is a small component that determines how much heat to produce and when to produce it. When this part starts to fail, you might notice that hot air is not being forced through your vents. Your home temperature drops even when you have the temperature set at the temperature that you normally use. Intermittent heating can also occur when this part is starting to go bad. This is an issue that should generally be addressed by a professional since an accurate diagnosis is imperative, as well as a proper fix.

Odd Furnace Noises

Your furnace generally operates rather quietly, so when it starts to get loud or makes abnormal noises, this indicates that there is a problem. Different noises typically mean that certain issues might be happening. For example, if you notice screeching or squealing, this can indicate issues with your motor bearings or a bad belt. The blower motor or assembly might also make thumping, banging, rattling or clanking noises.

There are a few other noises that you want to be mindful of. If you notice repeated clicking sounds, this might mean that your relay is defective, or there could be a problem with your outside compressor or the control panel. Rattling could indicate a failing compressor, a failing motor or loose hardware.

Make note of these issues and should you notice a problem with your heating system, do not delay consulting with a professional. Keeping your heating system in good working order not only ensures that your home is comfortable, but it also allows for greater system efficiency.
