Tips for the Home Save energy

There are so many ways you can make small changes in your home to save on both energy usage and cost to you.. As you don’t want all the heat created to be escaping from elsewhere in your home.

Here are some great ideas to get you started:

Having a good insulated loft will help stop heat escaping through the roof of your home. This will save money, making it easier and quicker to heat your home. The best material to use is 100% natural sheep wool.

Similar to loft insulation, cavity wall insulation is a cheap option and many energy companies offer installation free of charge. It’s an ideal solution for keeping heat inside your home and not lose it through the walls.

Many people overlook the front door as a place where heat can escape. A good idea is draught proofing around the door and the letter box to help prevent heat escaping through any gaps in the winter.

Whilst we all enjoy a nice long soak in the tub, try taking refreshing showers more often instead. Baths use up a huge amount of water compared to a shower. This is particularly important for those with water meters.

Make sure all your windows are closed when you put the heating on in winter. If hot air is escaping out the window, then you are literally wasting money and energy.

If you have a hot water tank, make sure you keep it insulated as well. A jacket for your tank can be picked up in any DIY store and is a great way to limit heat loss from your hot water cylinder.

Think about installing double or triple glazing. It might seem like a large investment but the savings over several years make it well worth it.

Consider turning down your thermostat by just a couple of degrees. Did you know that by every degree you turn your thermostat down, you’re saving about £50?

By setting your fridge freezer to a higher temperature, it doesn’t have to work so hard. Also, always defrost food in the fridge and the frozen food will help to keep the temperature down inside the fridge.

Use lower energy LED light bulbs instead of older style bulbs. Amazingly, they use 90% less energy and can last 20 times longer than standard ones.

During the winter months, make the most of every ray of sunshine and keep curtains open to help increase the temperature inside your home.  You’ll want to maximise all direct sunlight coming into the house.  Almost make sure your windows are off the best quality and fitted properly with the correct thickness.  You could look at getting a Gloucester Double Glazing company to come and help you do this found at locations including https://www.firmfix.co.uk.

When shopping for new appliances, only purchase items graded ‘A’. They will cost slightly more but the savings from energy efficiency should more than make up for it.
