Oil paints are known to be the preferred artwork material for many painters. The simple reason for this is that they are long lasting as well as easy to use. Painting rookies are also likely to finish and accomplish a given project simply by mixing these beautiful paints that have a buttery consistency in the palette cups. Here are five steps for beginners when starting out with oil paint on canvas.

  1. Gather materials – In modern times, oil paints are available naturally and it depends upon the kind you choose. The older as well as the traditional varieties require some kind of solvent that can help clean the brushes and make the paints thinner. On the other hand, you can opt for water soluble paints that can be mixed with a bit of water to modify the pigments. So accordingly, you will need,

  • Brushes

  • Palette knives

  • Palette cups

  • Turpentine solvents

  • Water

  • Stretched canvas mounted on an easel or other painting surface

  • Palette pads or sheets

Apart from these main supplies for oil paint on canvas, you will also need old newspapers or rags, spray fixatives, kneaded erasers, mahlstick to rest your painting hand and graphite or charcoal pencils. Depending on the kind of surface you are working on, you will also need a primer that is commercially available since canvas always tends to absorb the first layer of paint.

  1. Choosing a quiet and safe place to start your work – Your next job is to find a quiet and a safe place to sit on and do your work in peace. You should also take care that the place has plenty of fresh air and light to work with your oil paints on canvas. Avoid sitting too close to the window or else you might get your painting wet in the rain or too dry in the harsh sun.

  2. Start by sketching – Prior to start painting, you need to learn sketching first. To start the sketch, you need to plan your image first. For this you need to dedicate the first 20-30 minutes in the sketching process. This is an essential part when it comes to how to oil paint. It is better if you can keep the sketch simple and also allow yourself to make mistakes. You don’t have to create a masterpiece on your very first attempt. you can also buy canvas  prints direct from the factory and chose art style like watercolors and others .

After all these have been done, you need to set your goals, correct mistakes, decide when to finish and to take care of your oil paint on canvas. It is your brainchild and taking care of the priorities will give you a successful painting experience.
