Using Natural Stone Tiles in Your Home

If you have decided to tile one of the rooms in your house, you should seriously consider using natural stone tiles. The price of them has fallen substantially in the last few years, making them less expensive than high end ceramic tiles. They are not perfect for all tiling jobs, but their versatility, durability and looks make them very popular with homeowners. If you decide to use natural stone tiles, then there are three sub-types that you can choose from…

Travertine – This type of stone comes in a nice variety of shades of brown and has a very attractive look. Some people are put off by the fact they are porous and have lots of tiny holes in them, but that is only a problem if you are using them in a bathroom. Even then, you can use a filler / solution to prevent any water seeping in and deteriorating the tiles.

Granite – This type of tile is perfect for floors and outdoor purposes. As granite is formed from molten rock, it is easy to see why it is so durable. Granite tiles really will last a lifetime. You do not have much choice with regards to coloring and styles, but there is a natural charm to the way they look.

Slate – These tiles are easy to cut and shape however you want. They are mostly gray in color, but there are some nice variations to choose from too. They are best used for walls and countertops. The reason being that the thickness of them, even within the same box, will probably vary slightly..

If you want some idea as to what each type of these tiles looks like, and also as to how much each type varies as to color and thickness, then just type ‘travertine tiles, ‘granite tiles’ or ‘slate tiles’ into a Google image search. Alternatively, you can browse the website of a company who specializes in natural stone tiles
